The Funding Step is an independent commercial finance brokerage based in Wolverhampton, supporting businesses across the UK.
Built on a decade and a half of experience across banking, lending and alternative commercial finance, the business was established to help business owners explore funding options with a more personal and straightforward approach.
Having worked directly with businesses and assessed commercial lending applications, we understand both sides of the funding process: what a business is trying to achieve and what a lender needs to consider when reviewing an application.
Our focus is on helping businesses understand the options available to them and supporting them through the process of exploring commercial finance.

Finding business finance isn’t always straightforward.
With different lenders, finance products and eligibility criteria to consider, knowing where to begin can sometimes feel complicated.
That’s why we believe the process should start with understanding your business rather than immediately looking at finance products.
We take the time to understand where your business is today, what you’re looking to achieve and why you may need funding.
From there, we can help you explore potential commercial finance options and understand the information lenders may require when considering an application.
Our approach is straightforward, “understand the business, explore the possibilities and help you take the next step”.
And sometimes, the next step isn’t finance at all.
Not every business is ready to approach a lender.
Sometimes, the first step is developing a business plan, reviewing cashflow forecasts or getting financial information into better shape.
That’s why The Funding Step also provides Business & Cashflow Planning support, helping businesses prepare for future funding opportunities or simply gain a clearer understanding of their financial position.

I’m Sahib Sehmbey, founder of The Funding Step.
I’ve spent the last 15 years working across banking, lending and alternative commercial finance, supporting businesses at different stages of their development.
Throughout my career, one of the things I’ve enjoyed most is working with business owners, understanding what they’re trying to achieve and helping them explore ways to move their businesses forward.
My experience has included working with businesses ranging from pre-start-ups to established companies seeking funding to grow, invest in equipment, manage cashflow or pursue new opportunities.
I’ve also worked on the lender’s side, assessing commercial lending applications, reviewing business plans and financial information, and considering proposals from a lender’s perspective.
That experience has given me an understanding of both sides of the process and has shaped the way I work today.
After years of working within lending organisations, I wanted to build something of my own.
I wanted the opportunity to work independently with businesses and provide a service that reflects what I believe is important: taking the time to understand the business, being straightforward about the options available and treating every enquiry as more than just another application.
For me, it’s about understanding where a business is today, what it’s trying to achieve and how the right support might help it move forward.
My aim is simple: to make commercial finance feel more approachable, more understandable and more personal.
